Refer to STEP 11: I make a commitment to nurture my relationship with God, asking Him to reveal His will to me and give me the power to carry it out.
There are unemployables in the spiritual domain, spiritually decrepit people, who refuse to do anything unless they are supernaturally inspired. The proof that we are rightly related to God is that we do our best whether we feel like it or not.
—Oswald Chambers
We live in a generation where it seems there are more Christians who have a materialistic mindset than not. Routinely, they take a commercial outlook toward each area of life and calculate, “What’s in it for me?”
This way of thinking, which pervades all aspects of Christendom, is anathema to the Gospel and the New Testament work ethic. Only giving when it feels good—or to one’s advantage—has nothing to do with the kind of person Christ called you to be. Yet, it’s precisely the way twenty-first-century Christians behave. Millions have distorted the truth so significantly they have become convinced their materialistic perspective is godly.
But nothing could be further from the truth.
After experiencing spiritual abuse, your perspective on life has changed, hasn’t it? Once you’ve been wounded and have suffered for an extended period of time, you no longer have a fascination with the successful “Christian model.” Probably, most of your worldliness has been weeded out, leaving you “fertile ground,” ready for a more worthwhile and productive life.
As you work the 11 Steps to spiritual freedom, you learn to be ready “in season and out,” helping people in need, regardless of what their situation happens to be. Having escaped the generation of Christians who love to smile at those in distress and say, “Be warmed and be filled,” you are ready for the real work ahead—for the fulfillment that comes from serving others the way the Lord did—selflessly.
Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which He promised to those who love Him? (James 2: 5)
